Why do I have heavy flow during my period?

Are you having heavy flow periods and wondering what's the reason? We tell you more.

First of all, you should know that all women are different. As a result, not every woman's menstrual cycle and period will be the same. This difference also applies to the menstrual flow. This can be light, medium or heavy, and therefore manifests itself in bleeding during the period, which can be heavy or light. For some women, a very heavy flow of menstrual bleeding can be a real constraint in their daily life, but how can this difference in flow be explained?

How do you know if you have a heavy period?

If you lose more than 80ml of blood a day when you have your period, you may have a heavy period, also known as menorrhagia. If you have to change your sanitary protection every hour, you may have a heavy flow. Heavy periods can mean longer bleeding, lasting more than 7 days. Although this affects many women, it is important to be aware of some worrying signs.

Should heavy periods be a cause for concern?

In most cases, heavy periods are not serious. However, if you notice blood clots in your underwear, feel pain, and your heavy bleeding lasts longer than 7 days, it is important to consult a specialist to rule out any risks. When you have heavy periods, it is also possible to develop anaemia (a drop in blood levels in the body). The reason for it? Simply because the blood does not have enough time to renew itself due to the heavy losses.

If your periods are disabling in your daily life or seem worrying, do not hesitate to consult a specialist. He or she will be able to guide you towards medical solutions.
