Dysmenorrhoea: why does my stomach hurt when I have my period?

Stomachache during your period is one of the most common symptoms. But what is the reason for it? We tell you more.

It's well known that getting your period is no picnic. So much so that many women are affected by premenstrual syndrome - which manifests itself in a variety of symptoms, such as headaches, stomach aches, mood swings and muscle pain. One of the most common symptoms of PMS is stomachache. Here are the causes.

What is dysmenorrhoea?

Pain in the stomach and lower abdomen area has a name: dysmenorrhoea. In most cases, this pain is caused by slight or strong contractions of the uterus. The pain in the belly can also feel like cramps and spread to the lower back. In general, these pains can last between 2 and 3 days and usually occur on the day before or the first day of the period. These cramps are 'normal' and vary in intensity for each woman.

Is it normal to have stomach pains?

It is common to have mild to moderate pain for a short period of time. However, if you experience intense, unusual and widespread pain throughout your body for several days during or before your period - which forces you to lie down and which makes it difficult for you to cope with your daily life - it is advisable to consult a gynecologist. Diseases such as endometriosis, polycystic ovarian cysts or other conditions can cause these pains. On the other hand, menstruation is usually painful. In general, the pain eases over the years. However, not all women are affected, which is why it is advisable to discuss these complaints with a specialist.

How can you relieve stomach pains?

Fortunately, there are medical solutions to reduce these "ordinary" stomach pains. A doctor can prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs. However, be aware that some medicines can also increase bleeding during your period. It is also possible to reduce stomach pains naturally. How can you do this? By practicing a sport that suits you, getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet and relaxing.
