During your menstrual cycle, your belly is more swollen, you feel bloated and you tend to gain weight more quickly? Don't worry, this is completely normal and not really "cool", we agree. We'll tell you more about these discomforts and give you some tips on how to deal with them.

Why do we get bloating during our menstrual cycle?

According to an expert interviewed by the website Madame Figaro, there are many reasons for this discomfort. According to Sylvain Mimoun, a psychosomatic gynecologist, everything is linked to our intestines.

A few days before the period, just after ovulation, the progesterone level increases to prepare the body for a possible pregnancy," explains the specialist. This hormone tends to relax the muscles around the intestine. The intestine then slows down and accumulates more gas.

All of this unpleasantness causes bloating and swelling. As the gynecologist explains in Madame Figaro, "Some women think it is their uterus that is swelling, when in fact it is the intestines.

Bloating: what solutions to avoid it?

In order to feel better during your menstrual cycle and to limit bloating, here are some tips.

Wear loose clothing

Avoid wearing tight clothing during your menstrual cycle. Not only are they uncomfortable, but they can also make it easier to bloat and swell. Instead, opt for flowing, stretchy or simply comfortable clothes.

Eat the right foods

As you can imagine, certain foods can make bloating easier. It is therefore recommended that you avoid eating them during your menstrual cycle. Some of these foods to avoid are

Raw vegetables

Wheat cereals

Large or fatty meals

Starchy foods (prefer small doses)

Cruciferous vegetables, such as, cabbage, cauliflower, or Brussels sprouts

Try vegetable charcoal

As reported by Madame Figaro, vegetable charcoal is an excellent way to reduce bloating. In fact, it helps to promote gas and therefore reduce bloating.

Drink plenty of water

Finally, in order to detoxify your intestines as much as possible, it is recommended to drink a lot of water. You will certainly go to the toilet regularly, but you will feel much better. It's up to you!
